Dr. Betzalel Avitzur
Dr. Avitzur has been
a Professor in the Department
of Materials Science and Engineering at Lehigh
University since 1964, founded the Institute for Metal Forming there
and became its director. He heads the Loewy chair since 1993, when the chair
was established. He is teaching and doing research and consulting in metal
flow and gross plastic deformation.
From October 1961 to September 1964, Dr. Avitzur was appointed as Senior
Lecturer at the Technion-Israel Institute
of Technology, Department of
Mechanical Engineering.
From 1959-1961 he was employed at the Ford Motor Co., Scientific Laboratory.
His work included the study of the mechanical processes of plastic working
of metals, such as rolling, wire drawing and extrusion, and spinning. He
was involved in a feasibility study for the automation of a rolling mill.
He also participated in a study of ultra-high strength steels, investigating
different deformation-temperature histories and their effects on the material
properties.
Dr. Avitzur received his early education in mechanical engineering at
the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, graduating with a B.Sc. and
Dip.Ing. in July 1949. During the years 1949-1954, he was engaged in Government
research and development work in Israel. In 1955, he came to the University of Michigan where he gained his doctorate.
His studies were primarily concerned with the plasticworking of metals and
his thesis for the degree of Ph.D. was a study of the power spinning operation.
Dr. Avitzur is a member of the Editorial Boards of the "Journal
of Mechanical Working Technology", and of several professional society
committees (metal forming and lubrication divisions).
Dr. Avitzur was elected a Fellow in The
American Society of Mechanical Engineers in May 1982. He is a reciepient
of the ASME "Blackall
Machine Tool and Gage Award" for 1988, and became an Honorary Member
of the Japan Society
of Technology of Plasticity (JSTP) in 1993.
Dr. Avitzur is the author of numerous technical
papers and four books entitled, "Metal Forming: Processes and Analysis,"
"Metal Forming: The Application of Limit Analysis," "Handbook
of Metal-Forming Processes." and, co-authored with Dr. S. Talbert, "Elementary
Mechanics of Plastic Flow in Metal Forming." Dr. Avitzur also
Co-edited with Prof. Chester Van-Tyne
the book entitled, "Production to Near Net Shape."
